21.5 Hours

Just one final, exerting pull and the zippers on my duffel bag meet. There it is: all the clothes, shoes, snacks, books, and random other items I will need for two months. It is obese.
In less than 24 hours, I will be on an airplane, probably taxi-ing to the runway. I'll take off from JFK and land in Heathrow in London, and after a day-long layover I'll be off to Johannesburg and Gaborone. I'll leave New York on Sunday, and arrive in Botswana on Tuesday morning. School starts on Wednesday.
Now my tweed carry-on faces me, daring me to stuff it as full as my suitcase. No way, I promise. At least I will carry light, even if I couldn't pack light. Or so I say...maybe the bag will win as I struggle in the morning, frantically rushing to see if I have everything.
But I know that the material things I take on this trip will make no difference in the end.
