El Teatro Principal

The Plaza del Pilar is filled with pigeons and little children giving them rice. Well, if running at top speed with a fistful of grain and throwing it with full force at whichever pigeon is the victim of the moment can be considered a gift...The sun is illuminating the white relief on the front of the Pilar, but I've found a nice shady spot to sit in and use the free public wifi.
Sunday is a day of paseos and bicycling here in Zaragoza. Judging by the sound of people in the streets until 3 o'clock in the morning, though, I'm guessing it is also a day for sleeping for some. Last night I was not outside but inside, as Carmen hosted a dinner party, inviting 9 of her friends. We spent most of the afternoon preparing the food and tidying up, and then ate and chatted until well past midnight.
The night before I did go out: to the theater! Zaragoza's main theater is only a five or ten minute walk from my house, so I'd seen the signs advertising "Días de Vino y Rosas" walking home from school. A fellow student at SYA had told me he liked theater, so I figured I'd invite him. We invited another girl as well and met in the nearest plaza at 9:30 (the play started at 10). The cheapest seats are on the fourth floor terrace (which is actually the fifth, since in Spain the first level is called the "planta baja" and then the next one is the "primero piso"), so we trekked up the many stairs to our dizzyingly high seats. Luckily, one of the friend's host mother had given him a pair of binoculars, so we could see the faces of the actors when we passed them around. The theater's acoustics were fantastic, however, so we could hear every word, and we could see the whole stage if we leaned over the bar a little. The show was wonderful: a story of love wrecked by alchoholism. There is a famous American movie version, too...but I am convinced that the live Spanish version, in a gorgeous historic theater, was much better.
